Specialty Contact Lenses
There are times when contact lens wear is not simply an elective luxury, but rather a necessity. Two of the
most common conditions to which this applies include a corneal disease called keratoconus and in LASIK / RK
vision surgery complications. Both of these conditions require specialty contact lens rehabilitation to restore
functional vision, and we can help.
Utilizing sophisticated corneal mapping technology we can accurately image the corneal distortions inherent
in both of these conditions. Then, by employing equally sophisticated CAD/CAM, (Computer Assisted Design
/ Computer Assisted Manufacture,) programs Dr. Prasnikar can design one-of-a-kind contact lenses for
maximum comfort & vision.
Dr. Prasnikar has received extensive training in the use of the Keratron Corneal Topographer and is a charter
Certified Wave Contact Lens Designer.
Keratoconus
Keratoconus, (KC,) is a progressive thinning of the front of the
eye, the cornea. When the cornea thins it begins to bulge
unnaturally and vision becomes markedly distorted. The cause is
not exactly known but may include genetic, environmental &
hormonal influences. Because the cornea distorts in an irregular
fashion vision is generally not correctable with glasses or
conventional contact lenses.
The good news is that using properly designed rehabilitative
contact lenses we can achieve outstanding improvements in
visual acuity. With vision restored our patients continue to excell
in school, achieve at work, and compete in sports.

It is an unfortunate reality of medicine that things do not always go
as planned. Vision correction surgery is certainly not immune to
complications. The result is generally visual impairment that can
range from mild to profound. Sometimes this failure will be evident
almost immediately after surgery, while other times it may take
years before it manifests itself. Whatever the cause, visual rehab
with specialty contact lenses is often the best option to restore
functional vision.
Vision surgery failures offer unique challenges to contact lens fitting
and wear. The corneal surface is often distorted in bizarre ways.
Normal tearing mechanisms may be destroyed leading to severe dry
eye. Psychological depression is common...and understandable. We
have created an environment well suited to address these unique
challenges. We are empathetic listeners. We are generous with our
time. We employ cutting edge technologies. We don’t give up.
